1st ECO Rehabarama to be held in Huber Heights in mid May

In partnership with CountyCorp’s The Housing Source and Wright-Patt Credit Union, the Home Builders Association of Dayton (HBA) is presenting the first Eco Rehabarama this coming May in the community of Huber Heights.  In the 19 year history of Rehabarama home shows, this is the first time the show has taken place outside the City of Dayton.

Ten nearly historical homes located in one of the original sections of Huber Heights are being rehabilitated to exceed today’s standards for safe, comfortable, efficient and sustainable living.  The work will culminate with a public invited, two weekend home showcase in May 2012.  Seven residential construction professional members of the HBA of Dayton are performing the transformations.

The 1,000 to 1,700 square foot homes are being totally reconstructed after major deconstruction took them back to the shell of the originally framed structures with the famous Huber brick veneer.  The deconstruction process is an environmentally friendly means of selective demolition, proper disposal of solid waste and reuse of the original home’s building materials.  By deconstructing buildings rather than demolishing them, Dayton Works Plus and the Deconstruction Depot are allowing materials to be reused in other building and renovation projects, diverting waste, creating jobs and protecting natural resources.

HBA of Dayton members were encouraged to provide their talents and creativity to the remodeling of these very typical floor plans of the original production built homes.  “These are not your Father’s Huber Homes” says Walt Hibner, Executive Director of the HBA of Dayton.

The incredible enhancements to the very accessible slab on grade homes will include new long life roofs and low maintenance exterior siding, high efficiency windows, high density insulation, state of the art mechanical systems including HVAC, electrical, security and water efficient plumbing systems. Some will include alternate energy aspects, rainwater recovery systems, Energy Star appliances, new technology pervious pavement and resource efficient landscaping.  The homes will be rated to the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Standard, providing a comparison between the original home and the Eco-rehabbed home.

Many of the homes will display various “aging in place” features which meet a growing market demand as the large Baby Boomer population ages gracefully and prefers to sustain independence in smaller, affordable, low maintenance homes.

The Eco-Rehabarama event will take place May 11-13 & May 18-20 with special events such as green living and eco educational programs, cooking demonstrations, etc. throughout both weekends.

The homes are being marketed by CountyCorp’s The Housing Source for occupancy at the conclusion of the show. The homes will sell for $95,000 to $125,000 .  Contact Adam Blake, 531-7048, for sale information.

Solar Thermal Install in Huber Heights

On Saturday, March 19th, a team led by Wendell Ott of EnergyWize and Robert Gilbert, Director of the Center for Energy Education of Sinclair Community College, began the installation of the first Solar Thermal Water Heating System in one of CountyCorp’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) homes in Huber Heights.  EnergyWize supplied the expertise and equipment to make the installation a success and Mr. Gilbert’s Alternative Energy students benefitted by learning about the equipment and helping with the installation.

CountyCorp is using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to purchase vacant, foreclosed homes that are eyesores in the neighborhoods and turning them into models of energy efficiency.  Taking the worst home on the block and making it a model for the neighborhood will help stem the decline in property values in these areas.  As these homes sell, the money is rotated back into the program to continue this beneficial work.  All of the construction on the homes is done to code by local professional contractors.  CountyCorp is also committed to helping create jobs and supporting job training efforts like the Sinclair Community College Energy Program and Dayton Works Plus, a non-profit program to train ex-offenders in marketable skills.  By investing in greater Dayton communities in Montgomery County, CountyCorp is helping to support local economies.

When asked about the program, Wendell Ott said, “It’s good for the students to get this hands-on training outside of the classroom.  I think it is great that Montgomery County and CountyCorp can provide this opportunity to help train these students for the green jobs of the future.  We look forward to partnering with CountyCorp on more of these installations in the future.”

This home on Kitridge Road in Huber Heights is currently being renovated by C&N Industrial Contractors.  It is being redeveloped into a fully accessible home for anyone with physical disabilities.  There is a great need for fully accessible housing in Montgomery County and this project will help address that need.
